The Ministry of External Affairs announced on Friday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accepted the invitation from his Bhutanese counterpart, Tshering Tobgay, to visit Bhutan next week. This decision came after PM Modi met with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in New Delhi on Thursday.
According to a press release by the MEA, “On behalf of the King of Bhutan, PM Tshering Tobgay extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to visit Bhutan next week. Prime Minister accepted the invitation.” This visit marks Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay’s first overseas visit since assuming office in February 2024.
The discussions between the two leaders encompassed various aspects of bilateral partnership, emphasizing infrastructure development, connectivity, energy, hydropower cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and development cooperation. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to strengthening the special and unique friendship between India and Bhutan.
Furthermore, the press release highlighted Prime Minister Tobgay’s appreciation for India’s steadfast support as a reliable, trusted, and valued partner in Bhutan’s developmental endeavors.
In a related context, the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, conducted an official visit to India from November 03-10, 2023, visiting Assam, New Delhi, and Maharashtra. During this visit, discussions were held between the King of Bhutan and PM Modi on various bilateral cooperation areas, as well as regional and global issues of mutual concern.
The longstanding bilateral ties between India and Bhutan are characterized by deep trust, goodwill, and mutual understanding across all levels. The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to delve into diverse sectors of cooperation and further strengthen their relationship.
During his visit, the King of Bhutan also extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to make an official visit to Bhutan, reinforcing the commitment to fostering bilateral ties between the two nations.
