On its first anniversary since its inception, the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology PGIMER is soon going to start live-donor liver transplant. The department has got all the requisite government official permissions in January 2021. The Director PGI Dr Jagat Ram gave this information while inaugurating the first hybrid CME namely 1st Prof B L Talwar Oration here in Chandigarh on Thursday.

“The Department would be able to do Brain dead liver transplant and Live-Donor Liver Transplant both soon. There is only a minor hitch to have the separate infrastructure for Liver Transplant cases which is soon going to sort out. We already have got all the requisite permissions with us in January only,” says Dr. Jagat Ram, Director PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Prof Vikas Gupta told The Daily Guardian, “For the Live-Donor Liver transplant, there are certain rules and norms under which we can do the transplant like in case of Live-Donor of Liver, the donor has to be a Relative only and further medical technical things has to be matching. Whereas for the Braindead case there are different norms. In the case of Live-Donor, we split the Liver into two parts and further transplant it in the recipient’s body, there are many technicalities in this to see if the transplant could happen or not. ” Adding to this information Prof Dr. Gupta says, “There are many challenges for any institute to start Liver Transplant, we got the permissions and so far in Government Medical institutes of this region, we might be the first one to start Live-Donor Liver Transplant”.
