Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s letter has created flutters in the Supreme court who alleged irregularities by Justice N.V. Ramana, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, and next in line to become the Chief Justice of India.

After the Delhi High Court Bar Association took serious objection to Jagan’s letter lowering the dignity of Justice N.V. Ramana by casting aspersions, two Supreme Court lawyers filed a petition in the apex court with an appeal to remove Jagan as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The two petitioners are G.S. Mani and Pradeep Kumar Yadav.

Commenting on the matter, BJP leader Lanka Dinakar said that the Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy-led YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh should have kept the issue confidential.

“But the Andhra Pradesh government adviser and their aides had expressed their views and content of the letter to the CJI openly to the media scrupulously. As per the legal experts, it will be the contempt of the court against the Jaganmohan Reddyled YSRCP government.”

Jagan in his letter to CJI S.A. Bobde had alleged impropriety by Justice Ramana. In the letter, dated 6 October, Jagan had accused Justice Ramana of “influencing the sittings of the (AP) High Court including the roster of a few honourable judges” and cited “instances of how matters important to Telugu Desam Party (opposition in AP) have been allocated to a few honourable judges”.

Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan has called for a thorough investigation into the allegations leveled against a sitting Supreme Court judge. He stated that the serious charges of corruption require an independent investigation with the three retired judges of the Supreme Court.

Bhushan tweeted, “When a CM makes serious charges of corruption against a senior judge slated to become the next CJI to the present CJI, it needs a quick, independent & credible investigation, by 3 retired judges of the SC. No point in saying that CM is corrupt or that he should not make this public.”
