Former Army Chief Gen V.K. Singh on Sunday underlined the “drastic” change in the security situation in Uttar Pradesh since Yogi Adityanath became the Chief Minister and said that people can now move out of their houses in the dark without fear of snatching incidents. Gen Singh, who is also a Minister in the Narendra Modi government, took a swipe at the previous governments in the state over the law and order stating that people were scared to move out of their houses after dark, which is not the case under the Yogi government. The Ghaziabad MP was speaking at the launch of the book “Yogi Ramrajya” by author Chetna Negi on the role of the UP Chief Minister in improving the law and order situation in the state. As the Member of Parliament from Ghaziabad, I know that there was a time when people either waited for daylight or carried weapons to travel on highways at night.

However, after the Yogi government came to power, the situation has changed drastically and there is no fear, “he said. Speaking on the occasion, Uttar Pradesh’s Additional Chief Secretary Navneet Sehgal said that the UP Chief Minister has proved to be a top administrator, as could be seen during the COVID crisis, where crores of workers were taken care of by the state when they were returning from other states. “A large number of workers were from outside the state, but the Chief Minister did not discriminate and took a quick decision that all those passing through the state would be provided meals and shelter,” he said. Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat termed the UP Chief Minister as a strict administrator with the heart of a saint who works round the clock for the welfare of the poor

Gehlot expects to meet Sonia Gandhi today over Rajasthan crisis

Published

By

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is slated to meet with Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday, in an effort to defuse the crisis that was started in Rajasthan when lawmakers sympathetic to him challenged the appointment of his opponent Sachin Pilot to the position of governor. When it came to selecting Gehlot’s successor, the MPs wanted a say in the decision. They argued against Pilot’s promotion due to his 2020 uprising against the chief minister.

The meeting is anticipated as doubt over next month’s internal party election caused by the uprising in Rajasthan has led to the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Digvijaya Singh, emerging as a potential candidate.

On Thursday, Singh was also anticipated to meet Gandhi. The previous front-runner for the position, Gehlot was planning to submit his name for the election on October 17.

It is supposedly expected of Gehlot to explain what happened and distance himself from his followers’ conduct. Additionally, it appears that he apologised to Gandhi.

Rajasthan, one of just two states where the Congress is in sole control, will hold elections in 14 months.

Supreme court

The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that an unmarried woman, like married women, can have an abortion up to 24 weeks under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. According to the Supreme Court, sexual assault by husbands can take the form of rape, and the definition of rape under the MTP Act and Rules for the purposes of abortion must include the definition of marital rape.

The rulings came as the Supreme Court was set to rule today on whether an unmarried woman in a consensual relationship can seek abortion of pregnancy of 20-24 weeks term.

According to Justice DY Chandrachud, the interpretation of the MTP act must reflect social realities. As society changes, social mores change and evolve, and laws must not remain static in order to advance the cause.

“Unsafe abortions are preventable. Our understanding of mental health has to be considered in common parlance. Account must be taken of a pregnant woman’s environment,” the Supreme Court said.

“Married women may also form part of survivors of sexual assault or rape. A woman may become pregnant due to a non-consensual act by her husband. Sex and gender-based violence in all its form have been part of families,” Justice Chandrachud said.
