A 40-year-old man from Dumdum Cantonment area of West Bengal boarded the New Delhi-Sealdah Rajdhani Express and has reportedly gone missing since June 27.

With several safety concerns already plagging Indian Railways after successive accidents of Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express and Kanchenjunga Express, the vanishing act of a passenger from one of India’s prestigious trains has again brought forth the issue of railway security.

Missing man Mausam Ghosh is said to have boarded the Rajdhani Express at New Delhi station on June 27. His train was supposed to reach Sealdah the next day. However Ghosh never reached his destination on June 28. His luggage and mobile phone were found lying unattended inside one of the coaches.

Media reports say he could not meet him at the railway station. Subsequent calls made to Ghosh’s mobile phone were received by an RPF official, who said that the phone was found inside the train.

The friend subsequently called up Ghosh’s family, who rushed to the station. His luggage and mobile phone were found, but Ghosh himself remained missing. Distraught, they turned to the Government Railway Police for help, who reportedly refused to file a missing person’s report, according to Bengali news website 24 Ghanta.

The family has since filed a missing complaint at the Dumdum police station, but so far there is no trace of Ghosh. His family has questioned the security arrangements of the Rajdhani Express, one of India’s elite train services.

The police have circulated the missing person details to all possible locations. The railways, however, have not responded to any queries from the media on this incident.
