The election arena has started burning ahead of the Sangrur by-elections that are to be held on 23 June. In Punjab, Congress will contest the Sangrur by-election in the name of late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has released the election anthem for the bypoll in the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat. In this song, pictures of Moosewala’s dead body and memorial are shown. The song has a line that says that if the son does not return, ask the mother what we should do for such a change. The AAP won the last assembly elections on the pretext of bringing change. Congress is also trying to justify the resentment of the youth against AAP under the pretext of killing Moosewala. Also, Congress is besieging the AAP government over law and order.

This is pertinent to mention here that after the Moosewala family showed its resentment over making him as an agenda for election, Warring cleared later that Congress is not fighting election over Moosewala’s name.

Moosewala had four gunmen, out of which the AAP government led by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann withdrew two gunmen. The next day, 29 May, Moosewala was shot dead in Jawarke village in Mansa. However, two gunmen were not with him at that time.

Moosewala had joined the Congress party before the Punjab Assembly elections. He contested from Mansa seat on a Congress ticket. He lost the election to AAP Candidate Vijay Singla who is now under the lens on graft charges.

Moosewala’s life was in danger. So they wanted permanent security from the government. However, with the change of government, their security was changed.

It may be recalled that Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann had resigned as a Member of Lok Sabha from the Sangrur constituency after winning the Assembly elections. Voting has now been announced for the by-elections on 23 June, while the results will be announced on 26 June. The Sangrur by-election is the first since the formation of the AAP government in the state with a resounding victory in the March 2022 Assembly elections.
