Karachi has reported nearly 9,000 road accidents in 2024, resulting in the loss of 771 lives and injuries to 8,174 others, according to a rescue services report cited by ARY News on Tuesday.

The monthly breakdown reveals a grim pattern of fatalities and injuries: January recorded 94 deaths and 734 injuries, February saw 57 deaths and 720 injuries, March reported 49 deaths and 521 injuries, and April registered 64 deaths with 490 injuries. In May, 48 people lost their lives and 464 were injured, while June reported 73 fatalities and 649 injuries. July saw 35 deaths and 627 injuries, August recorded 45 deaths and 521 injuries, September reported 70 deaths and 781 injuries, and October recorded 66 deaths with 980 injuries. November saw 90 deaths and 989 injuries, while December so far has reported 80 fatalities and 700 injuries.

In comparison, 2023 saw over 1,400 fatalities and more than 18,000 injuries in road accidents in Karachi. Overspeeding and riding motorbikes without helmets were identified as the primary causes of these accidents. Many of the injured in 2023 were left permanently handicapped, according to rescue sources cited by ARY News.
