Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Interim Budget 2024, expressing optimism that the Central government’s commendable policies would secure the BJP’s return to power for the third consecutive term. During her budget speech in the Lok Sabha, she highlighted the nation’s high aspirations, pride in the present, and optimism for a bright future. Sitharaman emphasized the government’s efforts in lifting 25 crore people out of multidimensional poverty over the past decade.

“In the second term, our government strengthened its vision of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, and Sabka Vishwas,” stated the Finance Minister, outlining the government’s commitment to inclusive development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the Cabinet meeting, approving the Interim Budget 2024 ahead of its presentation in Parliament. This marks Sitharaman’s sixth budget presentation, concluding the second term of the Modi government.

The Interim Budget addresses financial needs during the transitional period until a new government forms after the Lok Sabha polls. The Budget Session of Parliament commenced with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Sitharaman equaled the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964.
