Most people celebrate Chhath in states like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. People fast, take river baths, and pray during the celebration to give thanks to the Sun God for granting their wishes and providing the blessings of life on Earth. Offerings are made to the god Surya/Bhaskar (Sun) and goddess Chhath (Chhathi Maiya), and prayers are said for blessings. It is thought that blessings would come from a person’s deepest desires and prayers. Merely foods deemed pure are consumed during the fasting period, and hygiene is one of the most important considerations.
