At the Kempegowda international airport in Bengaluru, customs officers arrested a passenger on Friday for allegedly travelling with drugs. The suspect came from Addis Abeba, Ethiopia, and more research is being done.
The accused was allegedly carrying 1926 grammes of “heroin” concealed within layers of a carton box that was transported as check-in luggage, according to the customs agents.
Under the authority of the 1985 Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), drugs were seized.
A post on the official Twitter handle of Bengaluru Customs read, “Based on credible information received, customs officers intercepted a pax flying from Addis Ababa to Bengaluru. A total of 1926 grams of ‘Heroin’ was recovered and seized under NDPS Act, 1985.” The accused was produced before the NDPS magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody.
The Bengaluru Cops arrested a Nigerian drug dealer earlier this month on suspicion of engaging in narcotics distribution in the city’s Hennur district. Cops also found drugs on the defendants that were worth Rs. 20 lakhs, including 230 grammes of MDMA crystals, and they all were seized.
The Bengaluru Cops arrested eleven persons for allegedly selling drugs throughout the city in October as well. There were reportedly Rs 1 crore worth of drugs seized. Five of the 11 suspects were foreign nationals who were busted in Bengaluru while dealing drugs like MDMA and marijuana.
Operation Narcos, a campaign by the Karnataka Police to completely reduce drug use in the state, was unveiled. To apprehend the drug dealers in the state, special operations are also being carried out as part of “operation Narcos.”
