Vikram Athwal, a 35-year-old employee of a garbage collecting company who was arrested for the murder of a 23-year-old air hostess at her Andheri apartment, committed suicide after falling into a deep melancholy. He was heard telling the guard at the Andheri (E) jail that he shouldn’t have killed the victim.
The Mumbai crime branch unit 9 has taken on the investigation of an unintentional suicide case that was reported to the Andheri police station.
Around 8.30 am, Athwal was discovered dead. He had hanged himself from the pipe in the bathroom of the prison using his pants as a rope. “The guard discovered Atwal uneasy and dejected on Thursday night. After three days of police detention, he was set to appear before Andheri Court. At 6.30 am, he went into the bathroom. He was discovered hanging after failing to leave the house for two hours, according to a police officer.
