Govt Committed to Genuine Sports Talent, Says Minister at Fencing Championship in Jammu

In a strong stance against the politicization of sports, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering genuine sports talent, ensuring that only deserving athletes receive support. Sharma made these remarks as he inaugurated the under-14 boys and girls Fencing Championship at the University of Jammu, part of the 68th National School Games held across India.

The championship, which has drawn promising young athletes from all over the country, is organized by the J&K Department of Youth Services and Sports (YS&S) under the aegis of the School Games Federation of India. Addressing attendees, Sharma emphasized that the National School Games are a vital platform for young athletes to gain exposure, discipline, and a competitive spirit. He assured that individuals who misuse sports organizations for personal gain would be held accountable and removed.

Sharma praised parents, coaches, and teachers for their support of young athletes and stressed that the current administration is committed to building strong sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed confidence that, with the collaboration of the Prime Minister, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Sports Ministry, J&K would see a new era of sports with world-class facilities, enabling local athletes to compete at both national and international levels.

The Minister also highlighted the role of sports in promoting healthy lifestyles and character development, steering youth away from negative influences. Secretary YS&S, Sarmad Hafeez, congratulated the YS&S Directorate for its successful organization of previous National School Games events, such as in Wushu, and voiced optimism for the championships to follow. The inaugural ceremony featured an opening address by Director General of YS&S, Rajinder Singh Tara, with other dignitaries in attendance, underscoring the significance of this national sports gathering.
