Govt Committed to Enhancing Healthcare for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: JP Nadda

Union Health Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Speaking at the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling Competition at Thyagaraj Sports Complex on Wednesday, Nadda emphasized the need for systemic changes to ensure better medical care for individuals with IDD.

Training Healthcare Professionals for Specialized Care

Nadda highlighted the unique healthcare challenges faced by individuals with IDD, often leading to inadequate health outcomes. “People with IDD face difficulties in accessing appropriate healthcare and support. To address this, we need to upgrade the skills of healthcare professionals,” he said.

He stressed the importance of equipping medical professionals with training to address the specific needs of IDD individuals. “Healthcare providers must learn to recognize unique health concerns, communicate effectively using simplified language or assistive devices, and show empathy towards the special needs of IDD patients,” Nadda added.

The minister also acknowledged the significant role played by caregivers, families, and support organizations. “Their dedication drives change, and their partnership is essential in building a more inclusive, accessible, and equitable healthcare system,” he stated, while lauding the contributions of the Special Olympics and the Golisano Foundation.

Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling Competition

The Thyagaraj Sports Complex became the stage for history as India hosted the inaugural Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling Competition. The event celebrates the abilities and resilience of 81 athletes with IDD from 12 nations, running until November 22.

This marks a milestone in the Special Olympics movement, as Bowling makes its competitive debut in India. Athletes showcased their talents and inspired spectators with their determination and skill.

Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal, present at the event, expressed admiration for the participants. “Today, we celebrate the dedication and perseverance of these young athletes,” Jindal remarked, quoting Swami Vivekananda: “‘Believe in yourself, and the world will be at your feet.’ These remarkable individuals remind us that true strength lies in overcoming challenges with grace.”

The Special Olympics Asia Pacific Bocce and Bowling Competition has emerged as a symbol of empowerment and inclusion, celebrating the extraordinary potential of athletes with IDD.
