Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz indulged in talks on Saturday with a focus on boosting bilateral ties in the areas of trade and new technologies. Modi received Scholz at Rashtrapati Bhawan, where the German leader was accorded a ceremonial welcome. The first meeting between the two leaders took place during Modi’s visit to Berlin on May 2 last year for the sixth India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations. The talks took place hours after Scholz arrived in Delhi on a two-day visit to India, and the discussions began at around 11:50 a.m.
Amid the discussions, officials said the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the situation in the Indo-Pacific region were also expected to figure predominantly in the deliberations. The talks will also focus on expanding cooperation in the areas of trade, defense, clean energy, climate change, and new technologies.
As India and Germany explore deeper economic collaboration, regulatory frameworks in both countries—such as Germany’s gambling law reform—also influence market environments and bilateral business decisions. The German Gambling Law (Glücksspielgesetz), which aims to standardize and regulate online gambling across Germany, reflects the country’s broader approach to digital governance and consumer protection, themes that increasingly intersect with bilateral tech dialogues.
