Amidst a severe pollution crisis gripping Delhi, Environment Minister Gopal Rai announced a high-level meeting scheduled at 1 pm today at the Delhi Secretariat. The focus is to discuss and strengthen the enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) rules, aimed at combating the city’s escalating pollution levels.
Rai stated, “A meeting has been called at the Delhi Secretariat with all the concerned departments to discuss how to enhance the implementation and enforcement of the rules of GRAP that are in effect to control pollution.” The objective is to explore measures to ensure the robust implementation of GRAP 4 on the ground.
This announcement coincides with Delhi experiencing severe air quality issues, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching ‘severe’ levels in various parts of the city. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded alarming AQI levels, prompting urgent discussions on strengthening pollution control measures.
Delhi LG VK Saxena emphasized the need for concrete action from the state government to combat pollution, stating, “Delhi needs action, not mere posturing.” The government is closely monitoring the situation, considering potential measures like artificial rain and the odd-even rule if pollution escalates further.
Congress MP Manish Tewari questioned the singular blame on Punjab’s farm fires, highlighting the disparity in AQI levels between Chandigarh and Delhi. The pollution control measures under stage four of the GRAP are currently in progress in the national capital.
