Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, on Wednesday opened four special Mohalla Clinics to offer free gynaecological and paediatric medical care to women and children under the age of 12. He also announced the opening of 100 additional clinics throughout the city.

There are already 519 regular mohalla clinics spread around Delhi, and the government plans to build additional 100 of similar facilities in regions without access to these government-run local health clinics.

Kejriwal announced in a statement to the media following the opening of the clinics that the staff at these specialised clinics would also be entirely female. In order to address this issue, four mahila mohalla clinics were opened, according to Kejriwal. “Women used to find it difficult to discuss gynaecological problems with male doctors,” he said. “In the past, patients had to travel to large hospitals with long lines and limited medicine supply, such as AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), Safdarjung, and GTB (Guru Teg Bahadur) hospitals, even for minor medical conditions like fever, cough, and cold.

The CM said that this issue has been resolved by the opening mohalla clinics, which provides a “world-class facility to patients free of cost” .

“This model has been adopted by the leaders and CMs of other states,” Kejriwal claimed. “I would be more than happy if they start establishing mahila mohalla clinics in other states as well.”
