Chennai: A tense situation prevailed in the Virudhunagar district, as hundreds of AIADMK and DMK cadres clashed after DMK cadres burnt effigies of Minister Rajendra Balaji for his comment on DMK MP A. Raja.
The war of words erupted between both the political parties after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami accused DMK leaders of 2G corruption and responding to the allegations made by the Chief Minister, DMK MP A. Raja dared the Chief Minister to prove the corruption allegations made by him on the DMK. Raja also said that he is ready for a one-on-one debate with the Chief Minister at the Secretariat. Tamil Nadu Dairy Minister Rajendra Balaji, who addressed media in Virudhunagar, made unscrupulous comments on DMK president M.K. Stalin and said that he is ready to debate with Raja and doesn’t need the likes of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami to prove the corruption charges on DMK.
Agitated by the remarks made by Balaji, at least hundred DMK cadres gathered and burnt effigies of the minister on Monday in Virudhunagar and on hearing this, AIADMK cadres also gathered at the same spot and raised slogans against the DMK cadres. The situation escalated after AIADMK cadres burnt effigies of Stalin in retaliation and both the party workers started to clash with each other.
Police personnel were deployed in a large number to disperse the party cadres and used mild lathi-charge against them. AIADMK and DMK leaders have started to attack at each other over the corruption charges against them ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
