Center-left candidate Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front coalition triumphed in Uruguay’s presidential runoff election, official results confirmed Sunday, securing 49.81% of the vote with 99% of ballots counted. His conservative rival, Álvaro Delgado, garnered 45.90%.

Addressing a jubilant crowd in Montevideo, Orsi declared, “The horizon is brightening,” and pledged to foster national dialogue. “Uruguay stands as a country of freedom, equality, and fraternity,” he said, signaling his commitment to unity.

Orsi, a 57-year-old former mayor of Canelones, ran on a platform emphasizing investment attraction, workforce development, and economic growth without tax hikes. He also outlined plans for enhanced cooperation with Europe on combating drug trafficking and improving prison systems.

The election results mark a shift in leadership following outgoing President Luis Lacalle Pou’s administration. Both Delgado and Lacalle Pou promptly conceded, congratulating Orsi and offering their support during the transition.

Uruguay’s political landscape, marked by relative moderation compared to its Latin American neighbors, saw Orsi’s Broad Front coalition win 16 of 30 Senate seats, bolstering his legislative support.

While the ruling National Party highlighted its economic successes, including falling inflation and rising wages, voters expressed concerns over crime and inequality. Orsi sought to reassure the electorate of a “modern left” approach, emphasizing gradual reforms rather than dramatic shifts.

The results follow a global trend of incumbent parties losing voter support amid economic pressures. As Uruguayans look ahead, Orsi’s leadership promises stability and a focus on addressing the nation’s pressing issues with pragmatic solutions.

Observers note the significance of this election for Uruguay, a nation renowned for its stability, legal cannabis framework, and progressive policies. Orsi’s victory concludes a year of high-stakes elections worldwide, characterized by shifts away from ruling parties amidst global economic challenges.
