Politics has once again heated up on the Uchana assembly seat in Haryana. Former Union Minister and BJP leader Birender Singh has invited his political rival, former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala to contest from Uchana on this seat. The main reason behind this is Abhay Chautala’s rhetoric of removing the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) party’s CM candidate from Uchana.
Singh said “Many CM candidates are willing to contest from Uchana. OP Chautala is also interested and so is Abhay Singh. There is no third CM candidate from this party. OP Chautala has contested elections before and he is welcome to contest from here if he decides to do so now.”
The current MLA on the Uchana seat is Deputy Chief Minister of the state, Dushyant Chautala. He had also announced his plans to contest the seat in the next Assembly elections as well. By inviting OP Chautala, Singh wants to make his way easier by making the election contest interesting.
Uchana seat is a hot commodity these days. Birender Singh and the Chautala family have each staked their claim on this seat. The Chautala and Singh families have gone head to head in the elections five times. Birender Singh defeated OP Chautala in the 1984 Lok Sabha elections and later lost to him in the 2009 Assembly elections. In 2014, Singh’s wife Premlata defeated Dushyant Chautala in the Assembly elections.
In 2019, Singh’s son Brijendra defeated Deputy CM Chautala in the Lok Sabha. Dushyant, however, defeated Premlata in the 2019 Assembly polls.
However, it will be difficult for OP Chautala to contest the election since he served a sentence in the JBT recruitment case. Dushyant may however, have to reconsider his decision if the Chautala patriarch is able to get legal relief and is allowed to contest in the elections.
