The recent surge in onion prices has left consumers across several cities grappling with higher expenses, with wholesale rates climbing steeply from Rs 40-60 per kilogram to Rs 70-80 per kilogram. The increased cost has many citizens concerned, especially in places like Delhi and Mumbai.
Rising Costs at the Wholesale Level
In Delhi, a market seller shared with ANI, “The price of onions has gone from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg. Since we source from the mandi, the wholesale prices directly influence what we charge customers. Although sales have dropped due to the hike, people still buy onions as they’re essential to our food habits.”
Consumer Concerns Over Household Impact
The price spike has affected families’ grocery budgets. Faiza, a Delhi resident, voiced her frustration: “Onion prices have increased even though, by season, they should have decreased. I paid Rs 70 per kg, which has strained our food habits at home. I appeal to the government to reduce prices, at least for daily-use vegetables.”
As of November 8, 2024, the average price of onions in Delhi has reached around Rs 80 per kilogram. Many states, including Maharashtra, are experiencing similar trends, with costs rising in key markets like Mumbai.
Mumbai Residents Feel the Price Pinch
Dr. Khan, a Mumbai resident, explained to ANI how the surge has impacted his budget: “Onion and garlic prices have increased significantly, nearly doubling. I bought 5 kg of onions for Rs 360, which has added to our household costs.”
The escalating onion prices nationwide are creating widespread distress, with many calling on government intervention to bring relief to daily expenses.
