Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, announced on Friday that there will be a debate in Parliament about “One Nation, One Election.” Inquiring as to why the Opposition was afraid of the plan, he described it as a development of Indian democracy.
He continued, “There will be a debate in Parliament (on ‘One Nation, One Election’). Why does the opposition seem to be afraid of it? Democracy is an evolving system, and India is where it all began. This is a natural element of evolution.
The minister for parliamentary affairs, however, made no mention of what would be discussed during this special session of Parliament.
In response to a question from a reporter, he replied, “I will discuss the agenda with you later as it relates to the special session.”
A committee led by former president Ram Nath Kovind has been established by the Union government to investigate the viability of “One Nation, One Election,” which calls for holding both the national election and state assembly elections simultaneously.
One Nation, One Election is a concept that has been rejected by the opposition INDIA alliance, which is convening in Mumbai.
