A deadly landslide near the Sonprayag area of Uttarakhand on Monday night has claimed the lives of five people, with three others left injured. The landslide, triggered by torrential rains, has caused severe disruption in the region as rescue operations continue.

According to Rudraprayag’s Additional District Magistrate, Shyam Singh Rana, the landslide occurred on a National Highway, burying passengers traveling along the route. “Five people lost their lives, and three injured individuals have been rescued by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF),” Rana stated. He urged residents and travelers to be cautious and plan their journeys according to the current weather conditions.

Uttarakhand Police reported that initial information indicated some travelers were trapped under the debris, prompting a joint rescue operation involving the police, local administration, SDRF, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences via a post on X (formerly Twitter), offering prayers for the victims and assuring that relief efforts are being closely monitored. “Very sad news about passengers trapped under debris between Sonprayag-Munkatiya. Local teams, NDRF, and SDRF are working on rescue efforts. I am in constant contact with officials to ensure every possible step is being taken,” the post read.

As the weather remains unpredictable, authorities are urging caution and preparedness for those traveling in the region.
