Princess Märtha Louise of Norway and her American partner, self-styled shaman Durek Verrett, are celebrating their wedding this weekend amidst public scrutiny. The festivities kicked off with a “meet and greet” at a historic hotel in Alesund, Norway, followed by a scenic boat trip to Geiranger, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where guests enjoyed a “light lunch” with views of the fjord’s mountains and waterfalls. The wedding ceremony is set for Saturday in a private event, as reported by the BBC.

Attendees include Swedish royal family members, social media influencers, and TV personalities such as Cynthia Bailey. Guests have been instructed to refrain from using phones or cameras and to avoid posting on social media. Märtha Louise, 52, and Verrett, 49, announced their engagement in 2022.

Princess Märtha Louise, King Harald’s eldest child, has faced criticism in Norway for her involvement in alternative spiritual practices. She lost her “Her Royal Highness” title in 2002 to start her own business and was previously married to the late writer Ari Behn, with whom she had three daughters.

Verrett, who claims to be a “sixth-generation shaman,” has attracted controversy with his unconventional claims and teachings. Despite their spiritual beliefs, the wedding will adhere to traditional Norwegian Church liturgy, officiated by Parish Priest Margit Lovise Holte.

The couple’s decision to sign an exclusive coverage deal with Hello! magazine has drawn criticism, as Norwegian media are excluded from reporting on the event. Additionally, they are working with Netflix on a documentary about their relationship, aiming to offer a global perspective on their story.
