Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra who won India’s first-ever silver medal in World Athletics Championships has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham due to an injury.

IOA Secretary General Rajiv Mehta said Neeraj has been advised to rest for one month, “Neeraj Chopra will not take part in Commonwealth Games 2022. He is not fit as he got injured in the finals of the World Athletic Championships. He informed us about this.”

While throwing an 88.13m throw at World Athletics Championships a couple of days ago, Neeraj sustained the injury.

“Following his participation in the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Mr. Chopra had had an MRI scan done on Monday and, based on it, he has been advised a month’s rest by his medical team,” Mehta added.

Moreover, Chopra was expected to be India’s flag bearer at the Games, but India team’s chef de mission Rajesh Bhandari said the new flag-bearer will be decided in a meeting.

Neeraj has been rewriting record books by winning a silver medal in World Athletics Championships or breaking his own record by throwing 89.30 meters at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

Earlier in 2021, Neeraj won the Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics by winning a throw of 87.58 meters.
