National Conference’s two-day working committee meeting is currently underway in Jammu and Kashmir to strategize for the upcoming assembly elections, likely scheduled for September or October this year. Former Chief Minister and party president Farooq Abdullah is leading the session, with senior leaders including Omar Abdullah in attendance.

“The working committee meeting is in progress and will continue for another day. Discussions are focused on core competencies and future courses of action,” stated party chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq.

Key agenda items include assessing the current political landscape, strengthening the organization, and preparing for the assembly elections. Sources indicate that party leaders are deliberating on strategies to maximize seats in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the recent Lok Sabha polls, the National Conference performed well by securing two seats but lost in Baramulla, where Vice-President Omar Abdullah was a candidate. The party remains optimistic about its electoral prospects, especially in Kashmir, despite earlier aspirations to win all three seats as part of the Opposition INDIA bloc.

The Supreme Court previously directed the Election Commission of India and the Centre to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September. Currently, the ECI is revising electoral rolls across all 20 districts of the Union Territory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also confirmed preparations for the assembly polls during his recent visit to Srinagar.

Besides the National Conference, other political parties are actively engaged in preparing for the upcoming assembly polls.
