Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, has sharply criticized NATO’s ongoing Steadfast Defender military exercises, labeling them as clear preparations for a potential conflict with Russia. Zakharova’s comments come amidst heightened tensions between Russia and the West, particularly following Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine in 2022.
Zakharova dismissed NATO’s recent accusations against Russia of engaging in hybrid attacks on member states as “misinformation.” She claimed that NATO’s allegations were intended to divert attention from the alliance’s own activities, particularly the large-scale military exercises taking place near Russia’s borders.
“Right now, NATO’s largest exercise since the Cold War, Steadfast Defender, is taking place near Russia’s borders. According to their scenario, coalition’s actions against Russia are being practiced using all the instruments, including hybrid and conventional weapons,” she exclaimed in a statement.
The Steadfast Defender exercises, announced by NATO in January, involve a significant deployment of forces, with around 90,000 troops participating. The drills are designed to simulate scenarios where U.S. troops would reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and along NATO’s eastern flank in the event of a conflict.
While NATO has emphasized that the exercises are defensive in nature and aimed at enhancing deterrence and defense capabilities, Russia has viewed them as provocative. Zakharova’s statement pointed out that the exercises include scenarios involving both conventional and hybrid warfare tactics, indicating NATO’s readiness to engage in various types of conflicts.
The ongoing military maneuvers have further strained relations between Russia and NATO, with Russia viewing them as a sign of NATO’s “irrevocable return” to Cold War-era strategies. The exercises are set to continue until May, raising concerns about a potential escalation in tensions in the region.
