Following days of protests at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital over the sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor, the facility is slowly returning to normal operations. According to Saptarshi Chatterjee, Medical Superintendent and Vice President of the hospital, patient numbers have surged from around 100 to over 1,000.
In a statement to ANI, Chatterjee expressed optimism about the hospital’s recovery. “We are gradually seeing improvements at RG Kar. The patient footfall has increased significantly, and all departments, including OPD and Emergency, are now functional,” he said. “We are working hard to ensure that patients do not suffer, and good days are on the horizon.”
Chatterjee also reported that the CBI team has completed its investigation at the hospital. “The CBI team seized all relevant documents, computers, and hard drives from my office. They provided us with a seizure list, and I went to the CGO complex to verify my signature on the documents,” he added.
In response to the upcoming Nabanna Abhijan Rally, which is scheduled to protest the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case, West Bengal police have enhanced security around the state secretariat, “Nabanna”. Police have deployed vajra vehicles, water cannons, and the Riot Control Force, and set up roadblocks with containers.
The West Bengal Police have labeled the rally as “illegal,” claiming it is intended to incite unrest in Kolkata. The rally, organized by Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj and other groups, aims to protest the recent rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, has sparked nationwide outrage and led to multiple protests demanding justice for the victim. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
