MP assembly polls: Kamal Nath calls review meeting of Congress candidates after a weak performance

A review meeting of the Congress candidates for the state assembly polls of 2023 has been called by Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Kamal Nath, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, in response to the party’s dismal election results. The meeting will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the state Congress office in Bhopal, as per the party’s circular. Congressman Nath will chair the candidate meeting and discuss the assembly-level election defeat.

Madhya Pradesh went to poll for 230 assembly seats in a single phase on November 17 and its result was declared on Sunday along with three other states. The Congress party stood at the second position by winning just 66 seats while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a comprehensive victory in the state by winning 163 seats.
During the last 2018 state assembly elections, the Congress party stood first by winning 114 seats while the BJP came second and managed to win 109 seats.

After 22 loyalist MLAs and then-Congressman Jyotiraditya Scindia joined the saffron camp in 2020, a political storm shook the state and brought the Congress to power under the leadership of veteran leader Kamal Nath as chief minister. After being reduced to a minority, the Congress government was overthrown, and the BJP, led by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, resumed his position as chief minister.
