In his 11th consecutive Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered the longest speech ever by an Indian Prime Minister, lasting 98 minutes. This speech surpassed his previous record of 96 minutes set in 2016. His shortest speech, by contrast, was 56 minutes long in 2017. On average, Modi’s Independence Day speeches last around 82 minutes, making them longer than any other Prime Minister’s.
Before Modi, the longest speech on record was given by Jawaharlal Nehru, lasting 72 minutes. On the other hand, the shortest speeches were delivered by former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, both clocking in at 14 minutes in 1954 and 1966, respectively.
During his 98-minute speech, Modi highlighted the theme of this year’s Independence Day celebrations—Viksit Bharat 2047. He stated, “For Viksit Bharat 2047, we invited suggestions from the countrymen. The many suggestions we received reflect the dreams and aspirations of our citizens. When the people of the nation have such big dreams, it takes our self-confidence to newer heights and we become more resolute.”
Addressing women’s safety in light of the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Modi emphasized the need for swift investigations and strict punishment for those guilty of such heinous crimes. “The country, society, State Governments will have to take this seriously. Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest – this is important to instill confidence in society,” he said.
Modi also criticized the opposition, saying, “We are moving forward with resolution but there are some people who cannot see progress or think of India’s good unless it benefits them…The country needs to protect itself from this handful of pessimistic people.”
