Assam Floods: 8 More People Lose Their Lives, Death Toll Reaches 66 In Past 24 Hours

In the past 24 hours, the situation in the northeastern state of Assam continues to be critical, as 8 more people lose their lives including three children to flood waters.

As a result, the death toll now stands at 66. According to ASDMA flood report, 2 people respectively died in Dhubri and Nalbari district. One casualty each from Cachar, Goalpara, Dhemaji, Sivasagar district died on sunday.

Overall, few districts of the state continued to be affected by flood situation. Around 22.74 lakh people from 28 districts are still impacted by the deluge.

These floods impacted districts include Kamrup, Nagaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Morigaon, Hailakandi, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Dibrugarh, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Nalbari, Charaideo, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Kamrup (M), Darrang, Sivasagar, Chirang and Tinsukia.

Around 3446 villages under 97 revenue circles continued to remain submerged and these flood waters in their wake have submerged 68432.75 hectares of crop area.

Besides humans, even animals are affected, as 1563426 animals are impacted by the floods.

On Sunday, around 214 animals have been washed away. Even infrastructure has been gravely affected. These flood waters have damaged 172 roads, 6 bridges and 8 embankments since the last 24 hours. Around 300 houses have been impacted by the flood disaster.

So far, the water level of Brahmaputra River is still above danger level at Neamatighat, Tezpur, and Dhubri. But in Guwahati, the river’s water level has decreased.

Actions Taken By Administration?

Currently, the rescue teams, which consists of NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services along with local establishment are conducting rescue operations in many flood-hit areas.

In order to examine the impact of floods and oversee the relief distribution, the Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the relief camps in Kamrup.

In addition, he also met people from Palashbari and decided to give them new houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).
