Mumbai is on the brink of embracing a transformative shift in transportation with the imminent arrival of its inaugural first electric boats, marking a significant milestone in the city’s maritime landscape. Commissioned by Union Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, these innovative vessels are poised to traverse the waters from Navi Mumbai to Mumbai, Elephanta Caves, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). As Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) commemorates its illustrious 250-year legacy, the unveiling of these electric boats underscores a momentous leap towards sustainable maritime practices.

These electric boats signify a paradigm shift in maritime transport, offering not only environmental benefits but also substantial cost savings. With lower operational expenses compared to traditional diesel boats, they promise to revolutionize waterway transit in Mumbai and beyond. Accompanying these electric marvels are a Solar Electric Hybrid boat and a Fuel Cell Electric Ferry christened “SUCHI,” further bolstering Mumbai’s eco-friendly maritime infrastructure.

Operated by Bharat Freight Group, the electric boats are slated to commence operations in June pending approvals from the Maharashtra Maritime Board. This heralds a new era of eco-conscious travel, aligning with global efforts to mitigate carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The celebratory event, held amidst MDL’s 250th-anniversary festivities, also featured the unveiling of an indigenous submarine named ‘Arowana’ and a host of other commemorative activities. From its humble origins in 1774 as a modest dry dock, MDL has evolved into a cornerstone of India’s maritime prowess, crafting sophisticated vessels for the Indian Navy and commercial purposes alike. As Mumbai prepares to welcome its maiden fleet of electric boats, it signals a watershed moment in the city’s maritime history, epitomizing its commitment to sustainable and forward-thinking transportation solutions.
