A 56-year-old man was arrested Wednesday evening on suspicion of murdering his live-in partner and chopping her body into pieces in his rented apartment on Mumbai’s Mira Road.
Decomposing body parts discovered in his home raised suspicions that the murder occurred two to three days ago, according to an officer from Nayanagar Police Station, who added, “It appears the accused had been living with the body parts all these days.”
Manoj Sahani, the accused, had been living with Saraswati Vaidya, 32, in an apartment building in Geeta Nagar Phase 7 for the past three years.
The Nayanagar PS received a complaint about 7 p.m. on Wednesday from residents who complained about a foul odour coming from the couple’s flat. The officers discovered the woman’s body parts after entering the building and entering the flat.
Sahani was apprehended right away. “We have arrested Sahani and are investigating to find out the motive behind the murder and how he carried it out,” said Jayant Bajbale, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 1).
“We believe Sahani cut the woman’s body into pieces so he could dispose of them easily,” Bajbale continued.
According to a Nayanagar Police Station officer, certain body parts are missing, and they assume the culprits dumped them somewhere.
Police are in the process of filing a FIR against Sahani for murder and evidence destruction. A forensic team has also been dispatched to the flat to collect samples and evidence.
