MS Dhoni’s future as an IPL cricketer has become a hot topic after he walked off the field with an emotional expression following Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru last week. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, known for his calm demeanor, left fans wondering if the 2024 season might be his last. This speculation follows Dhoni’s decision to hand over the captaincy to young Ruturaj Gaikwad at the start of the season.

A new report from news agency IANS, citing sources close to MS Dhoni, reveals that the CSK icon will likely travel to London soon to seek treatment for a muscle tear injury. According to the report, Dhoni plans to decide on his IPL future only after completing his treatment, which is expected to take around 5-6 months.

Former CSK Stars Weigh In

The uncertainty surrounding Dhoni’s future has sparked a debate among former CSK players. Ambati Rayudu, a former India batter, expressed hope that Dhoni would play another season. Speaking to Star Sports, Rayudu said, “MS Dhoni should play one more season. This shouldn’t be his last as he cannot leave like this. He should play next season and win the IPL. He’s a once-in-a-generation player and once-in-a-generation human being.”

Robin Uthappa, another former CSK batter, also believes that fans haven’t seen the last of Dhoni. Speaking to JioCinema, Uthappa stated, “I don’t think we have seen the last of MS. He is not someone who takes these things lightly. He will come back roaring for sure.”

However, Matthew Hayden, who has played alongside Dhoni at CSK, offered a different perspective. During a discussion on Star Sports, Hayden suggested that Dhoni’s recent knock against RCB might have been his last in the IPL. “I think this is it. I do believe that this will be the last time that Dhoni will play. Certainly, it won’t be the last time that we see Dhoni. I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t mentor or be a part of the family of CSK in an official capacity,” Hayden said.

Awaiting Dhoni’s Decision

Fans and former teammates await Dhoni’s decision, and the cricket world is abuzz with speculation. Will Dhoni return for another season, or will he transition to a mentorship role within CSK? The answer will likely depend on the outcome of his treatment in London and his recovery over the next few months. For now, the future of one of cricket’s most beloved figures remains uncertain.
