During the ongoing investigation and protests over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, Durga Devi, the mother-in-law of the accused Sanjoy Roy, proposed that others might have been involved in the crime, stating that Roy could not have acted alone.
In an interview with ANI on Monday, Durga Devi recounted her daughter’s troubled interactions with Roy, noting that Roy had physically assaulted her daughter, leading to a police complaint.
“My relations with him were very tense,” Durga Devi said, adding, “Initially, everything was good for 6 months. When she was 3 months pregnant, he caused a miscarriage. He thrashed her, and a police complaint was registered for the same. Following this, my daughter continued being ill, I bore all her expenses for medicines.”
“Sanjoy was not good. Hang him or do whatever you want with him. I won’t speak about the crime. He could not have done it alone. He can’t do it alone,” she said.
The rape and murder of a trainee doctor has ignited widespread outrage and protests in several cities, with demands for justice and punishment for the accused. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice of the case, with Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud scheduled to hear it on August 20.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been authorised to administer a polygraph test on the arrested suspect, according to earlier reports. On August 18, the CBI team conducted a 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
In response, the West Bengal government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate allegations of financial irregularities at RG Kar Hospital from January 2021 to the present. The SIT will have access to relevant documents from government departments and private agencies as needed for a swift investigation. The team is tasked with submitting its initial report within a month of its formation.
The SIT will be led by IG Pranav Kumar, with assistance from Murshidabad Range DIG Waquar Reza, West Bengal CID DIG Soma Das Mitra, and Kolkata (Central) DC Indira Mukherjee. The postgraduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.
