Congress MLA from Firozpur Jhirka, Maman Khan, is confronting increased troubles in the wake of his arrest in connection with the Nuh violence case in Haryana. Khan, presently embroiled in a legal mire, has been accused of non-cooperation with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is spearheading the
investigation.
According to SIT officials, Khan has exhibited reluctance in complying with the procedural requirements, notably refusing to affix his signature to his recorded statement. This refusal has consequently hindered the advancement of the
investigation.
The MLA’s alleged non-cooperation has invoked Section 180 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), prompting a court case where the defendant is accused of refusing to sign a legally necessitated statement made to a public servant. Further complicating matters, Khan, following the completion of his police remand, was presented in Nuh Court where the presiding authorities ordered a 14-day judicial custody. This development came on the heels of a series of allegations pointing towards the MLA’s role in instigating clashes in the Nagina area, a matter reflected in four separate FIRs lodged against him. Despite the hours-long interrogation that revealed significant details regarding the Nuh violence, officials argue that Khan’s refusal to sign the statement has rendered the interrogatory exercise futile, suggesting an incomplete disclosure of the implicated conspiracy. The SIT remains persistent in their endeavour to unearth details of the riot captured on CCTV, involving individuals purportedly mobilised by the MLA.
As of now, Khan faces possible imprisonment extending up to three months alongside a fine, in line with the provisions of IPC Section 180. This situation is still unfolding amidst a broader governmental response seeking to maintain peace in Nuh, where a ban on internet and bulk SMS services has been reinstated until midnight of September 19 to prevent potential disturbances to the peace and public order in the district.
