A tragic incident unfolded in San Pedro Garza Garcia, a suburb of Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, as a stage collapsed during a political event, resulting in six fatalities and at least 56 injuries. The event was attended by Jorge Alvarez Maynez, a progressive candidate, and other members of the Citizens’ Movement party.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed that the collapse was caused by strong winds. Mayor Miguel Trevino announced the casualties and injuries, noting that all the injured had been taken to hospitals.

The stage, set up on a baseball field, was hosting a campaign event for Lorenia Canavati, the Citizens’ Movement party’s candidate for the city’s mayoral election. The party canceled all scheduled events for the day due to the severe weather conditions.

Alvarez Maynez reassured the public of his safety and stated that he was in contact with state authorities to understand the situation. Canavati mentioned that her team was working with authorities to assist the victims.

Governor Samuel Garcia urged people to seek shelter from the storm, warning of strong winds and heavy rain. The meteorological service had predicted gusts of up to about 43 miles per hour in the region, with the possibility of tornadoes in Nuevo Leon and nearby areas.

The upcoming general election in Mexico, scheduled for June 2, will see citizens voting for the presidency and over 20,000 local, state, and congressional positions. The Citizens’ Movement party, a center-left party founded in 1999, is represented by Alvarez Maynez in this election as a third-party option.
