Merger of departments in Haryana carries political meanings

With the objective of improving administrative efficiency, the Haryana government has merged and reorganized some departments and a notification has also been issued . The merger of around two dozen departments carries political meaning ahead of assembly elections to be held in 2024. The Chief Minister is believed to take few of the portfolios from other ministers who failed to meet the expectations during the second tenure of the BJP-JJP led government.  Reshuffling of the portfolios of the ministers is most likely to take place in a few upcoming days. 

The issue of illegal mining continued to surface in the assembly which led to increase the problems of the ruling faction.  In wake of the poor performance of the several ministers namely, Mining Minister Moolchand Sharma, the Chief Minister might take his portfolio. Besides, The Chief Minister holds the porfolio of the sports  department after the Sports  MInister handed over his portfolio following the allegations of sexual harassment levelled by a  women athlete and junior coach. Besides, several changes might be made in the portfolios of Home Minister Anil Vi and the Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala which are likely to affect the state politics. It is pertinent to mention that with the merging of the Department of New and Renewable Energy with the Department of Power; the name of the new department has been changed to ‘Energy Department’.  

The Forest and Wildlife Department and Environment and Climate Change Department have been merged and changed to ‘Environment, Forests and Wildlife Department’. The Department of Archeology and Museums has been merged with the Department of Tourism and the name of the department has been changed to ‘Heritage and Tourism Department’. The Departments of Higher Education, Technical Education and the Department of Science and Technology have been merged and the new department has been named ‘Higher Education Department’.
