I come from a political background, but instead of pursuing a path in politics, my parents have inspired me toward sports since my childhood. My grandfather, Shri Bahadur Singh, served as the Education Minister of Haryana, while my father, Jagdeep Singh, is also an IAS officer. I take pride in both of them. My brother is an international-level shooter. Aspiring to make a mark in both fashion and sports, I began pursuing shooting as a hobby in the sixth grade.
Since then, I have never looked back. Winning 26 medals in international competitions, including a gold medal in the World University Games, has significantly boosted my confidence. We were always taught the value of hard work in sports, and it has truly paid off for me. However, I would also like to emphasize that, along with hard work, smart work is equally necessary.
After Abhinav Bindra won an Olympic medal, there has been a notable increase in the interest of many athletes in shooting. Playing on the big stage provides athletes with inspiration from international players. It is in such events that we realize how much more hard work is needed from us.
There is a need to work extensively at the grassroots level in shooting. Coaches, equipment, and sports-related tools should be provided at this level. This is a crucial phase when athletes require these resources the most. Providing equipment is also challenging for an average-income individual. This support should be available before reaching the national or state level. This way, significant issues can be addressed, and more talent will emerge in the sport. That is my belief.
In addition to coaching, equipment, and training, there is also a need for coaching to provide mental strength. After all, this sport is closely tied to mental resilience. I would go so far as to say that this applies not only to shooting but also to other sports. Only then can you hope for even more medals.
I was in Bhopal in the past few days. You’ll be amazed to know that in the National Championship held there, there were approximately over nine thousand entries in pistol and rifle competitions. Clearly, a lot of talent emerges amid intense competition. At times, it even feels like winning a medal at the international level might be easier compared to the National Championship.
