Colonel Vaibhav Anil Kale (Retd), a former Indian Army officer working as a Security Coordination Officer for the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) in Gaza, tragically lost his life on May 13, 2024, during a mission in Gaza. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Indian missions at the UN in New York and Israel are actively assisting in the repatriation of Colonel Kale’s mortal remains back to India.
The news has plunged Colonel Kale’s family, particularly his Thane residence, into profound grief and disbelief. His aunt, Mugdha Ashok Kale, expressed the family’s struggle to accept his sudden demise, highlighting his enduring presence in their hearts despite the shocking news. She mentioned that although reality dictates his passing, their minds are yet to fully reconcile with this loss.
Colonel Kale’s dedication to service, both in the Indian Army and later with the United Nations, has been praised by his family and colleagues. His cousin, Chinmay Ashok Kale, reminisced about his active nature since childhood and his deep commitment to fulfilling his grandfather’s dream of serving the nation. Despite initial setbacks, Colonel Kale persevered until he achieved his goal of joining the armed forces.
Ajita Kale, Colonel Kale’s sister-in-law, emphasized his unwavering commitment to his country, highlighting his readiness to sacrifice for the nation, a sentiment echoed by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in their official condolences to the family.
The United Nations also mourned Colonel Kale’s death, expressing deep sadness over the incident. The Secretary-General’s office condemned the attack on UN personnel and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. They reiterated the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of all hostages, emphasizing the toll the conflict in Gaza is taking on civilians and humanitarian workers.
