Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Chief Mayawati launched her party’s campaign for the Telangana assembly election on Wednesday, taking a dig at the previous Congress government. Mayawati asserted that the OBC community obtained reservations due to the efforts of the BSP, not the Congress party.

Addressing a public rally in Telangana’s Suryapet constituency, Mayawati reminded voters that reservations for the OBC community were granted under the central government led by former Prime Minister VP Singh, following the recommendations of the Mandal Commission. She emphasized that the Congress government did not implement these reservations; it was the result of the BSP’s struggles and hard work.

Mayawati criticized Congress for not honouring Baba Saheb Ambedkar with the Bharat Ratna, a recognition bestowed by the BSP. She highlighted that it was the BSP that played a role in Baba Saheb Ambedkar receiving the highest civilian award. Mayawati also pointed out the Congress’s lack of acknowledgement and mourning after the death of Kanshi Ram, who carried forward the legacy of Baba Saheb.

Mayawati lashed out at the Telangana government, expressing concern about the oppression of the state’s weaker sections of society. Telangana will go to the polls on November 30, with the results expected on December 3. In the previous 2018 Assembly election, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won 88 of the 119 seats with a 47.4% vote share, while the Congress received only 19 votes.
