MANISH MALHOTRA ALL ABOUT SEQUINS, SHINE AND SHIMMER

In an exclusive interview with The Daily Guardian, industry’s ace designer Manish Malhotra opens up about his love for sequins and decodes some of the looks designed by him.

Designer Manish Malhotra needs no introduction as his name and his luxury, contemporary Indian wear brand are known worldwide. Full of glamorous unique ensembles, Manish Malhotra’s line of collection consists of all—from lehengas and sarees to co-ord sets and gowns.

The designer, who’s been a huge trendsetter when it comes to ‘sequined sarees’, is a huge sequin lover. Reminiscing how he began using sequins in his designs, Malhotra shares, “My journey with designing began three decades ago, and sequin became my companion to revive clothes through the time”. With his designs and styles spread across varied silhouettes, Malhotra has juxtaposed modern-day designs and glimmering outfits with culture and traditions. He expresses, “I love intricate sequin work on chiffon sarees – it’s my absolute favourite! Be it a classic monotone red or an ombre sequin-swathed saree, the outfit is so fluid that it can make anyone look shiny, lustrous, and strikingly fabulous”.

Manish Malhotra in his career has designed for all big, small names and as he prepares to launch his next collection, he breaks down the looks of six bollywood actresses who recently adorned his garments.

KAREENA KAPOOR KHAN

For Ranbir-Alia’s mehendi, Kareena Kapoor Khan adorned a graceful sequinned lehenga from designer’s Khaab collection.

Calling her unapologetically glamorous, Malhotra shares that because Kareena can rock any look, they had to go for something that would make her stand out.

He adds, “An intricate handcrafted Kashmiri three-toned lehenga perfectly fit the bill as she looked ethereal and elegant in every way”.

SARA ALI KHAN

Actor Sara Ali Khan recently wore a purple-pink sequined saree in London, which was designed by Malhotra.

Talking about Sara’s look, the designer says, “For a young girl like Sara, metallic work and eccentric prints are few elements which harmonise with her millennial personality”.

The saree she wore is a part of Malhotra’s ‘Diffuse’ collection, which—he believes—has given a new definition to the ensembles he designs.

TARA SUTARIA

Actor-dancer Tara Sutaria Looked like a dream in a pearl-sequin outfit put together by the designer.

Breaking down her look, Malhotra explains, “Tara wore a Co-ord set from my Khaab collection and it consisted of a strapless, corset-style top paired with an A-line fitted skirt, and a matching dupatta”.

He also shares that the look was completely doused in tone-on-tone pearl embroidery, and contrasted with powder blue sequin work. Commenting on the choice of colour of the outfit, Malhotra remarks, “Tara is fond of ivories, and this set was an impactful way to incorporate glamour into a glitzy event”.

TABU

Tabu looked like a million bucks at Karan Johar’s birthday as she was dressed in an electric blue sequined-saree made by the designer.

Calling Tabu ‘timeless’ and labelling ‘saree’ as a timeless attire too, Malhotra, tells, “Tabu is just gorgeous so when she approached us to dress her, we knew that only our graceful and glamorous saree would justify her beauty”.

RASHMIKA MANDANA

Rashmika Mandana recently adorned a flouncy, figure-hugging, golden sequined gown which was designed by none other than Malhotra.

Calling her look a ‘show-stopping appearance’, Malhotra remarks, “The mermaid-like fall of the floor-sweeping train, the bare back detail, full sleeves, and reflective sequins on the gown offered a touch of exquisite grace and boldness to her elegance”.

The gown took 300 hours to be constructed and had a plunging neckline to accentuate the look.

PARINEETI CHOPRA

Parineeti Chopra also recently wore a black and golden clustered floral sequined outfit from Malhotra’s collection.

Clearing the confusion surrounding the attire, Malhotra shares, “Parineeti wore our 3D-flower encrusted blazer and paired it with a black bow shirt with gold motifs and black shorts”.

The designer tells that the idea behind this monochrome look was to amp up the glam quotient.
