A 24-year-old man was given a 10-year severe prison sentence by a Panipat court in Haryana for sexually abusing a little girl in January 2022.
On January 24, 2022, the 17-year-old girl was forcibly brought by the accused, a neighbor, into a room after he broke into her home. There, he attempted to rape her and took off her clothes. Her mother, who is crippled, responded to her screams and came to her aid. The accused attacked the mother—apart from the minor—out of fear of being discovered and then left the scene.
The assault was recorded on CCTV camera, whose footage proved to be a crucial piece of evidence at fast track court (Pocso Act) in Panipat.
After the trial that lasted two years, Sukhpreet Singh, the additional session judge of the fast track court (Pocso Act), convicted the 24-year-old accused under Section 4 of the Pocso Act, along with sections 452, 354B, and 354D of the IPC. He was awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000.
The minor told the court that the accused had been stalking her for the past six months. “He tried establishing a physical relationship with me despite repeated resistance. He even threatened to harm my family members when refused,” she said.
On January 24, the day of the incident, the minor narrated the ordeal to her father and brother, when they returned home in the evening.
The accused was nabbed within a few days after the minor’s brother filed a complaint with the Kila police station in Panipat. “The accused was following my sister for the past six months. He was forcing her to get physical and even threatened to harm our family”, he said. Rajesh Chaudhary, the district attorney of Panipat, said that the CCTV footage of the area proved crucial to nail the accused. The court denied leniency to the accused, emphasizing the need for stringent punishment for such crimes to serve as a deterrent.
