West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Law Minister Moloy Ghatak along with the state government, following the orders of the Supreme Court, have filed fresh applications in the Calcutta High Court for their Narada case affidavits.
The apex court has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Law Minister Malay Ghatak, and the state government to file an application in the High Court. The case was heard in the Supreme Court last Friday, and the judges of the apex court have said that the High Court would decide whether the application would be accepted.
In this regard, the Supreme court directed West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Law Minister Malay Ghatak to file applications for fresh affidavits in the Calcutta High Court on or before June 28, and also ordered the High Court to record the affidavits.
Narada case is being heard by a larger bench of the Calcutta High Court. Mamata’s lawyer Rakesh Dwivedi went to the High Court on June 9 to file an affidavit during the hearing of the case. The chief minister had originally applied for an affidavit in response to the allegations against her.
The acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal said the affidavits of the Chief Minister and the Law Minister would not be accepted as they were given after the stipulated time. State Advocate General Kishore Dutt told the court that according to the rules of the High Court, an affidavit can be submitted within four weeks of a case. But the judges did not accept that argument.
After that Mamata Banerjee and Malay Ghatak approached the Supreme court. At the hearing of the case, it was said that the advance copy of the application should be submitted by the 28th of June. The case is scheduled to be heard in the High Court on June 29. Moreover, the apex court also directed all concerned parties, including the CBI, to be notified of the application.
On Tuesday, a larger bench of the High Court will decide whether the affidavit will be accepted at all.
Ministers Subrata Mukherjee and Firhad Hakim, Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra and former mayor of Kolkata Sovan Chatterjee were arrested by the CBI On May 17. The lower court granted them bail on the same day.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was present at the Nizam’s Palace on the day of the incident, and the law minister was accused of leading protests outside. The CBI later claimed in court that the leaders had influenced the agency’s operation and the CBI court’s verdict by visiting the Nizam Palace office in Kolkata when three TMC leaders were arrested.
