West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav for eating fish during Navratri, offering to cook for Modi herself. Speaking at an election rally in Kolkata, Banerjee said she was prepared to prepare a meal for Modi but was unsure if he would consume it. The jab came amidst the ongoing political discourse around dietary choices and cultural sensitivity.

Modi had earlier expressed disapproval over Tejashwi Yadav’s video showing him enjoying fish during Navratri, accusing opposition leaders of displaying a ‘Mughal mindset’ and offending sentiments by consuming non-vegetarian food during religious periods. Banerjee’s offer to cook for Modi was seen as a response to this narrative, highlighting the diversity of eating habits and cultural practices across India.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader criticized BJP’s alleged interference in individuals’ food choices, emphasizing that different communities have their own customs and rituals regarding food. This exchange reflects a broader debate on cultural tolerance and inclusivity within the country’s political landscape.

In response, the BJP claimed that Banerjee’s offer was a deliberate attempt to entrap Modi, knowing well that he is a strict vegetarian. BJP leaders characterized her gesture as an insult to traditional Hindu practices, accusing her of playing political games.
