With mounting pressure from the Opposition against one of her minister’s comments against the President Draupadi Murmu, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today condemned the remarks and apologised for the same. Mamata said her party’s culture is not to make personal comments. “The MLA has been cautioned over his comments and the party has also apologised”, the chief minister said.
“We respect the President a lot. She is a very sweet lady, I apologise for the comments,” Ms Banerjee said, adding that “Akhil (Giri) has done something wrong; I condemn the comments and I apologise.
“Beauty is not about how you look, it is about how you are from the inside,” she added.
Earlier, a minister from Mamata’s cabinet Akhil Giri made an atrocious comment about the President leading to huge uproar cutting across the party lines. In a 17-second video clip, Mr Giri was heard commenting on the “looks of the President”. After the video clip of his comments went viral, Giri had apologised for making such a remark.
Trinamool Congress distanced itself from the comment and said the minister had done wrong thing by uttering such nasty comments.
However, that did not pacify the Oppositions who have been relentlessly protesting against the behaviour.
