Obesity is taking over the society as an epidemic. It is increasing at the rate of 5 per cent every year in the country. Now its effect is increasing in children also.
Dr ML Swarankar, founder and Chairperson of Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences provided this information while addressing the 40th annual conference on the theme ‘The Tsunami of Obesity – Call for Urgent Action’ of the International Medical Sciences Academy as a chief guest at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. He said obesity has also emerged as a cause of infertility among women.
Organizers Dr G N Saxena and Dr Puneet Rijhwani said that obesity is also considered responsible for diabetes, blood pressure, liver cirrhosis, blockage in blood vessels, joint pain and malfunction of the kidney and liver etc. He said high-calorie diets, fast food, physical inactivity and changing daily routines are responsible for the increasing weight. Dr. Shiv Sarin said, “Unbalanced eating habits affect the functioning of the liver. Fatty liver is a common problem in the community. Due to which many diseases start.” Diabetes and hormone disease specialist Dr SK Sharma said that BMI should be less than 23.
Vice Chancellor of the University Dr Achal Gulati, Dr Sudhir Sachdev, Dr ND Soni, Dr KK Pareek, Dr K Jagadishan, Dr RK Thukral, Dr Shashi Panikkar along with a large number of other dignitaries. Efforts of Dr Sanjay Singhal, Dr Munish Kakkar, Dr Rajeev Gupta, Dr Mukesh Sarna, Dr Deepak Gupta, Dr Anchin Kalia, and Dr Pradeep Aggarwal gave success to the
conference.
