Following the elimination of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, who was responsible for the October 7 attacks on Israel last year, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for the release of hostages still being held by Hamas.

Macron’s Statement on Sinwar

On social media platform X, Macron stated that Sinwar was the “main person” accountable for the “barbaric acts of October 7th.” He expressed his thoughts on the victims’ emotions, including those of 48 French citizens who were affected. “Yahya Sinwar was the main person responsible for the terrorist attacks and barbaric acts of October 7th. Today, I think about the emotions of the victims, including 48 of our compatriots, and their loved ones. France demands the release of all hostages still held by Hamas,” Macron wrote.

Biden’s Remarks on the Situation

Earlier, US President Joe Biden also praised the removal of Sinwar, labeling it a “good day” for Israel and for the world. He remarked that the death of the mastermind behind the Hamas attack on Israel “proves once again that no terrorists anywhere in the world can escape justice, no matter how long it takes.” Biden noted that for his “Israeli friends, this is no doubt a day of relief and reminiscence, similar to the scenes witnessed throughout the United States after President Obama ordered the raid to kill Osama Bin Laden in 2011.”

Context of the Conflict

Israel has confirmed the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, who played a crucial role in orchestrating the October 7 attacks. The conflict reignited after Hamas launched an attack on Israel that day, with approximately 2,500 militants crossing the border from the Gaza Strip. The assault resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals, including citizens from more than 30 countries, and over 250 people were taken hostage.

In response to the attacks, Israel initiated a counter-offensive against Hamas, vowing to dismantle the entire terrorist organization while striving to minimize civilian casualties.
