Former JNU student leader and Congress candidate for the North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency, Kanhaiya Kumar, submitted his nomination for the current Lok Sabha elections on Monday. Prior to filing his nomination, he shared a series of photos on social media, depicting him alongside leaders from diverse religious backgrounds. One image captured him taking part in a ‘hawan’ and Sarvdharam prayers.

“Today, before filing my nomination, Gurus of all religions presented me with the Preamble of the Constitution and prayed for me and blessed me. This is our India. This is our Constitution. ‘Sarva Dharma Sam Bhaav’. I will sacrifice my life to protect this India and its Constitution,” he said on X.

Yesterday, Kanhaiya Kumar shared a video where he expressed his commitment to combatting injustice and urged people to refrain from setting off fireworks, considering the environment. Contesting his second Lok Sabha election, he will face BJP’s two-time MP from the same constituency, Manoj Tiwari. In 2019, Kumar ran as a Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate from Begusarai in Bihar, losing to Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Giriraj Singh. He subsequently joined the Congress in 2021.

The North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency is among the seven parliamentary constituencies in New Delhi. It falls under the general category and includes parts of the Central Delhi district, the entire North East Delhi district, and portions of the Shahdara district. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Manoj Tiwari secured 53.90% of the votes.

In the current Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is in alliance with the AAP in Delhi. Under this arrangement, the Congress is contesting three seats while the AAP has candidates in four constituencies across Delhi. The seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the capital are New Delhi, South Delhi, East Delhi, West Delhi, Chandni Chowk, North West, and North East Delhi.

The Lok Sabha elections in Delhi are scheduled to take place in a single phase on May 25. Voting will be conducted for all 7 Lok Sabha seats in the region. Vote counting will be conducted nationwide on June 4.
