Lockdown relaxation sees surge in Covid cases in Delhi

Major spike in corona-positive cases in the national capital, 792 patients admitted in last 24 hours; total cases cross 15,000 mark.

Ever since the fourth phase of the lockdown was relaxed in Delhi, a surge in Covid-19 positive cases was observed. In the last 24 hours, 792 new coronavirus cases were recorded. The total number of cases in Delhi now stands at 15,275, of which 7,690 are active cases. According to the bulletin issued by the government of Delhi, 303 patients suffering from Covid-19 have died in Delhi so far.

In Delhi, 660 cases were reported on 22 May and 635 on 25 May. These numbers have caught the attention of political parties with both BJP and Congress questioning the ruling AAP government over such surge in numbers. BJP MP Gautam Gambhir expressed his worry about the spike in number of cases and told The Daily Guardian, “Poor implementation of facilities, no forward plan regarding patients and beds in hospitals, and no focus on doctors and health workers are the reasons why we are seeing such high numbers but nobody cares.

Basically, the Delhi CM is inhuman to the plight of these people.” Delhi Congress president Anil Chaudhary said, “The exemption given in Lockdown 4.0 is the reason why new cases of corona are coming. The CM boasted of the Delhi Government’s preparations. Now they are exposed. Today’s data clearly shows that the Delhi government has abandoned its people.

They have failed completely.” However, the AAP has rubbished all allegations levelled against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. AAP MLA Somnath Bharti said that the CM has been the choice of the people and has left “the CM of Gujarat” behind” in terms of popularity and trust of the people in managing this Covid-19 crisis. Delhi’s recovery rate is now 47.5%. If this trend continues and new cases do not increase rapidly, then the recovery rate can go beyond 50%. If this happens, the number of recurring patients in Delhi will be more than the active cases.
