Imagine unwinding in your home, watching your favorite TV show or preparing a delightful meal, when an eerie thought crosses your mind, what if someone else is secretly sharing your space? No, this isn‘t about ghosts or aliens, it‘s a real-life phenomenon known as “phrogging.”
Phrogging, taken from the idea of frogs hopping from one spot to another, is actually a term used to refer to people sneaking into homes to live there temporarily—and often without the homeowner‘s knowledge. Unlike burglars, phroggers aren‘t necessarily there to steal. Instead, they are looking for a free place to stay for a few days before moving on elsewhere. While it may sound exciting to some, itundeniably is a highly risky, creepy, and invasive act for the homeowner.
Although the occurrence of phrogging cannot be gauged properly, several bizarre cases have been reported.
In Tennessee, a shirtless intruder was found hidden in a homeowner’s crawlspace. The intruder also cooked meth. In South Carolina, a college student found someone living in her closet. The discovery came after hearing some unknown noises.
A Hawaiian couple had misplaced items and heard unknown sounds in their house. It later came to notice that someone was living in the house without the knowledge of its residents. In Iowa, a man broke into homes simply to use the computers to watch adult content.
What makes phrogging even more unsettling is that many phroggers likely go unnoticed. Only those who are caught make it to the news, leaving the possibility that countless others could be undetected.
If you’re feeling a sudden chill after reading this, here are some signs to watch for:
Unusual Sounds: Creaks and groans in the dead of night can be normal, but if it is unusual or repetitive, that may raise some flags.
Weird Smells: If there is cigarette smoke, an unknown perfume, or a musty smell, that may mean there’s an uninvited guest.
Lost or Displaced Items: If food, gadgets, or clothes keep disappearingor showing up in places they weren’t left, that could mean someone is phrogging.
Pets Acting ODD: Pets are always super sensitive to intruders. Sudden barking, growling, or unusual behaviour could mean someone is in your house.
While the idea of phrogging is unnerving, just being vigilant and observant may help. Secure your home, watch suspicious activity, and trust your instincts. In today‘s world, you never know who—or what—may be sharing your space.
